6 Ways To Keep Your Child Injury Free

As parents, we always give our best to keep our children safe. However, with sports, especially contact sports like football, soccer, and basketball, the risk for injury is high. To avoid unnecessary injuries, it’s important to take certain precautions. Whether it’s buying the right gear (see Strideline) or investing in good nutrition, it’s absolutely important to keep your child safe at all times.

  1. Invest In The Right Gear

Parents often underestimate the importance of proper gear. Invest in gear that allows your child to maximize mobility and stay protected from injuries.

For example, getting him/her the correct shoes and socks helps prevent unwanted sprains and blisters. Make sure his/her shoes and socks are the correct size and ideal for his/her respective sport. After practices and games, tell them to stretch out and get enough sleep. Getting enough rest will allow him/her to recover and avoid injuries. This is also extremely important to keep mind so they are awake and alert while in school! It’s a great learning experience in regards to life balance, setting priorities and taking responsibility.

Good health starts in the home. Surround your children with healthy food choices, and, as much as possible, keep them away from junk food and processed food.

Our bodies need fuel to play sports. The better your child eats, the better he/she will be able to perform on the field or on the court.

  1. Stay Hydrated

According to Harvard School Of Public Health, more than half of all children in the US are not getting enough hydration. If your child is into sports, all the more he/she needs to stay hydrated.

Hydration has tremendous effects on your child’s physical health and cognitive functioning. In other words, staying hydrated can actually improve his/her performance in sports and in academics.

Teach your child/ren to stay hydrated throughout practice and games by making sure there’s always water around – or “sports drinks” like Gaterade or Powerade.. Also, communicate to them the reasons why hydration is so important. When they realize how important getting enough water is, the more likely they will pay attention to their bodily functions.

  1. Regular Visits To The Doctor

Most of us parents need to accept that we have certain limitations. No matter how much attention you give to your child’s health, a doctor will always be able to see certain things that you don’t (unless you’re a doctor yourself, ofcourse).

Make sure to bring your child to a doctor’s checkup at least once a year to prevent anything unexpected from happening. A good doctor will be able to prescribe treatments and practices that can help your child stay in tip-top shape and avoid any injuries.

Sports should be an avenue for your children to let loose and have fun – and learn a few life lessons (sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline). The safer they are from injury, the more fun they’ll have on the field and court.
